Brass Chandeliers - Chandelier Lighting For an Oldish Modern Look

by Jessica Ford

The most vintage chandeliers that exists on this planet today are made from the metals brass and bronze. But there is also an even more vintage type of chandelier, and that is the wooden chandelier. This type was very uncomplicated. It was made up from two planks that were nailed together forming a cross. This construction helped to prevent hot wax from dripping on guests below.

A long time has passed since the first wooden chandeliers and today they are used in more and more homes. They are mainly used as a way of adding good taste and gracefulness to a room. A great way of doing that is to choose a brass chandelier.

If you keen an eye up on the ceiling next time you visit a fancy restaurant or a luxurious hotel, then don't be surprised if you find a brass chandelier hanging there with complementing fine art crystals. If you are bold enough you might want to ask the managers of these places why they have chosen a brass chandelier. If you are lucky then perhaps they will reveal why. But the fact is that a chandelier is a great way of improving the first impression that you get when visiting a place.

If we look at the characteristics of brass then we see that it's a very durable metal. Back in the days when we didn't have electrical street lights, brass chandeliers were used as they were very durable and could withstand corrosion easily.

About 3000 years ago a few metal workers in ancient Syria accidentally melted brass for the first time. Tin which is used to melt bronze and zinc which is used to melt brass are very similar and often found together. In this way some bronze that they melted was actually brass. It would take about another 3000 years before the metal workers learned how to do it right.

If you have doubts whether you have a real brass chandelier or something else you can take a kitchen magnet and try to stick it on the chandelier. If it stays on then you have some iron in it. This is fairly common as some brass chandeliers are in fact iron chandeliers with a thin brass coating.

Brass chandeliers require little maintenance. When they get dusty it's time to clean them and it's done with soap, water and a little piece of cloth. You don't need to worry about the chandelier rusting if you have a solid brass chandelier. But one thing to be careful with is to use cleaners that have ammonia in them. This will cause your chandelier to corrode.
